NOVAURIS BRINGS ITS LARGE-SCALE VOICE SEARCH CAPABILITY TO EMBEDDED DEVICES

Extension of NovaSearch technology opens up new possibilities for spoken interaction with stand-alone embedded devices, including one-shot US street address entry
Cheltenham, England and Sunnyvale, CA — April 1, 2008 — Novauris Technologies today announced NovaSearch® Compact™, the extension of its large-scale voice search technology, to hand-held and embedded devices such as smart phones and navigation products.
NovaSearch technology has already established itself in network-based large-scale voice search using servers through services such as the Verizon Wireless/Medio Systems Get It Now® Search, which gives Verizon Wireless subscribers voice access to the complete Verizon digital media catalogue simply by naming the item that interests them.
The new development makes possible a range of large-scale voice search applications that function autonomously without needing network access. For example, users of stand-alone navigation devices equipped with NovaSearch Compact can specify any street address in the US in the form number-street-city-state as a single utterance, without need for the time-consuming dialogues that are required by multi-stage speech input systems. Novauris reports that a spoken US address is identified within a few seconds using their proprietary speech recognition and search technology, and that it works well even in moving cars. Such one-shot spoken input of destination addresses has obvious attractions, especially when the user's hands and eyes are otherwise occupied.
Novauris has also demonstrated similar single-input location specification using so-called "points of interest", which include the names of specific companies and landmarks as well as generic items such as Italian restaurants or gas stations.
Another obvious area of application for the new capability is in music selection by voice. Novauris has demonstrated an application with around 10,000 music tracks, each of which can be selected by speaking the title or the artist or both.
Novauris CEO, Yoon Kim, says: "We believe that the speed and accuracy of Novauris large-scale mobile search on compact platforms is unique. The ability to offer single-input specification of any location in the US represents a huge step forward in the usability of navigation products."
Demonstrations have so far been given on ARM9/Intel XScale processors running Windows Mobile on smartphones and on Pocket PC devices such as the HP iPAQ PDA, but Novauris says that the technology can be ported to any processor of similar power and to other operating systems. Very large applications, such as the complete US address search need around 10 MB of active memory and processor clock speeds in excess of 400 MHz are recommended for locations to be identified within a few seconds. (See spec sheet for more details.)
